Data Breach

Many corporations have fallen victims to data breaches in recent years. Unfortunately, when breaches occur there are several parties involved and the act in itself can usually cause a panic attack among companies, customers and employees. Protecting highly sensitive information can be challenging for managers. They are obligated to protect such information and can be held liable if breaches occur. If an organization falls victim to a data breach and the information obtained is used for illicit purposes, the offending organization may be subject to fines or other civil or criminal prosecution (Rouse, n.d.). Information such as names, date of births, social security numbers, phone numbers, email addresses and employment information is usually obtained during a data breach.

In an effort to safeguard data, it is recommended that managers become familiar with data breach methods and ways to prevent their computers from being hacked. Managers should ensure that employees are trained on how to properly handle and dispose sensitive customer data. According to an article posted on IT Business Edge, “Negligent employees are the top cause of security breaches in the U.S. (Itbusinessedge.com, n.d.).” It is highly recommended that managers perform background checks on employees who at minimum, come in contact with sensitive customer information to thwart identity theft. Lastly, ensure there is a sound IT security infrastructure in place.
